Here is our report for Bordeaux 2020!

Nov. 10, 2020

The report give some interesting insights on the 2020 vintage in Bordeaux, examining Margaux, Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, Pessac-Léognan, Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe appellations.

After a long and very demanding year (even though we’d say that “demanding” fails to describe the challenges brought by a global and totally unexpected pandemic), autumn has arrived nonetheless, and a familiar scene has played out in Bordeaux during the last few months: every grape has been carefully picked and the harvest has safely landed for another year.

Saturnalia, in all of this, hasn’t missed a beat and we are ready to present you our Bordeaux 2020 harvest report. Harvest reports are one of the main services offered by Saturnalia, and what we want to do is provide you with exclusive and unique insights (e.g. precipitation data, Growing Degree days information, temperature trends and vineyards condition) on the current season, leveraging a combination of big data, artificial intelligence and cutting-edge technology.

What can you find in our report?
For this year we have succeeded in collecting even more data about Bordeaux appellations, meaning that, in comparison to Bordeaux 2019, we are now able to provide you with an extra layer of precision and depth. In particular, for each main appellation (Margaux, Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, Pessac-Léognan, Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe) you’ll find information on:

  • Precipitation data obtained thanks to the Global Precipitation Measurement mission, based on a collaboration between NASA and JAXA (Japanese Space Agency);
  • Data on the Land Surface Temperature (LST), the radiative skin temperature of the land, which is different from the air temperature measured by the weather stations on the ground;
  • Data on the Surface Soil Moisture, which calculates the relative water content of the top layer of soil;
  • And finally, two indexes created by Saturnalia. The first, the Saturnalia Evolution Index (SEI), is a custom vegetation index based on the chlorophyll content in the vineyard that continuously monitors its state and overall condition. The information collected over the time by this index is then summed up in another Saturnalia index, the Saturnalia Variation Index (SVI), which returns a clear, single value representing the performance of the whole season.

How can you use our report?
The aspect that we want to emphasise in our report, is that our estimates and predictions, being calculated by our proprietary AI-driven algorithms, represent a transparent and independent source of information, detached from any subjective judgement or personal opinion. Even though a certain degree of generalisation is always present in big regional vintage reports like this one, our science-based analyses can offer a new, complementary and reliable tool capable of providing a competitive advantage in the market and wine industry. This benefit will be even larger with the definition/calculation/extraction of Bordeaux 2020 scores, that will be available by the end of the month for our clients; once again, our scores are estimated well before any critics tasting event, and you can judge their reliability by reading our comparative analysis between our predicted scores and those given by critics for Bordeaux 2019. And if that is not enough, here’s another comparative analysis, this time focusing solely on our predictive model accuracy.

As you can see, we have laid all our cards on the table and now it’s up to you take advantage of the long days of work we have put behind the publication of our report. Just fill in the form at the end of this page and an automatic download of the report should immediately start.
